Here is a breakdown of how to handle products based on their, or lack thereof, preservation system
Aim to use them up within 3 to 4 months of opening.
Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner: Discard after 3 months (highest risk for bacteria).
Creams & Serums in Jars: 6 months (fingers in pots introduce bacteria).
Lotions/Liquids in Pumps: 6–12 months.
If you see these, throw them away immediately, regardless of when you opened them:
Separation: Water-based products separating into layers.
Odor: A sour, rancid, or unusual smell.
Color Change: Discoloration or yellowing.
Texture Change: Grainy, lumpy, or dried-out, especially for creams.
Why to Toss Paraben-Free Products. ....
Rapid Microbial Growth: Without parabens to act as preservatives, these products are highly susceptible to bacteria, mold, and fungi.
Shorter Shelf Life: Paraben-free products often expire within weeks or months rather than years.
Allergic Reactions: Alternative preservatives used, such as methylchloroisothiazolinone, can cause severe allergic reactions.
Contamination Risks: They may cause skin irritations or infections if spoiled.
